Pictionary has been around for a long time and couldn't be a simpler game to play. You have a word and have to draw it for other player to guess. Basically, it is the drawing version of charades.
This summer Mattel introduced a new version of Pictionary called Pictionary Air. The game is the same. A player draws a word for the other players to guess. However, the way you draw has changed. Instead of drawing on paper or a board you are drawing in the air, literally! A drawing pen is provided that you draw with in the air. The drawing appears in a free app on your iOS or Android device!
In addition to the pen you get 112 double sided cards with numerous drawing items on each side of the cards and hours of playtime without repeating. Mattel has even included the battery for the pen. Nice touch.
Does it work? Sometimes. It works sporadically in playing and it makes it very hard to play. We tried in different indoor lighting situations, and it did not seem to make a difference. Sometimes it worked great, sometimes not at all. Sometimes it was jittery in working.
Not only that, you have to draw in reverse. The camera image is backwards so your brain has to draw backwards. There is no setting in the app to fix this either. This is a big problem. For example, if you draw numbers or letters they look backwards on the display.
As an art teacher, I was hoping to use it in my classroom, but it is just too frustrating to play for even me, as an adult.
Unfortunately, I cannot recommend what had I had such high hopes for. Fun rating 2 out of 5 stars.
